Esimerkiksi sähköposti salakirjoitetaan vastaanottajan julkisella avaimella, jolloin salauksen voi purkaa vain salaisen avaimen haltija. Lähettäjän henkilöllisyys taas voidaan todistaa allekirjoituksella, joka tehdään salaisella avaimella. Näin vastaanottaja voi tarkistaa allekirjoituksen oikeellisuuden käyttämällä lähettäjän julkista avainta.
